A FOREIGN EFL EDUCATION PROFESSIONAL'S TRANS-MEDIA CULTURAL STORY OF LIVED EXPERIENCE IN CHINA
FROM XINJIANG [XUAR] TO SHANGHAI & BEYOND

Autoethnography is "an approach to research and writing that seeks to describe and systematically analyze personal experience in order to understand cultural experience. This approach challenges canonical ways of doing research and representing others and treats research as a political, socially-just and socially-conscious act. A researcher uses tenets of autobiography and ethnography to do and write autoethnography. Thus, as a method, autoethnography is both process and product."

2024/05/12: Being in Time is a 35 min auto-ethnographic film, the first half of a two-part digital feature. It explores foreign EFL teacher identity construct dialectics in contemporary China, qualified by China/West geopolitical tensions. It is an experimental pilot to an ongoing, episodic series within a longitudinal autoethnographic trans-media parent project. This parent project relates my lived experience as an EFL teacher in China's language education system. I worked within this system in both the public, government-run sector (secondary education in Xinjiang [XUAR] prior to tertiary pedagogic practice in Shandong and Shanghai) and the private, corporate driven EdTech sector (in Shanghai). The film was completed during "zero-Covid" conditions in China from 2020/02 to 2022/12. Second part production was thereafter initiated in tandem with my current tertiary level teaching of Inter-Cultural Communication [IC]. READ MORE

2.2.1(a) LATEST DIARY FILM
DIARY FILMS PLAYLIST: a chronological anthology of short autoethnographic re-conceptualizations of the diary film format, Evocative interpretivism perhaps. Travelogue-based but heavily montaged for aesthetic and discursive purposes. Sporadically updated as pieces to potentially draw on for future anthologizing.
2.2.1(b) LATEST EXTENDED FEATURE
FEATURE FILM ROUGH-CUT: An artifact - incomplete record of the last time I saw my father alive and the two of us re-visited his former hometown of Coober Pedy, South Australia. An opal mining town, I spent my childhood there and much reflection on the film of "Being in Time" (above) is inspired by such place memories.
2.2.1(c) LATEST MUSIC VIDEO MASHUP
AUTOETHNOGRAPHIC MUSIC VIDEO MASHUPS: experimental AV montages of original video edited with found object media overlays and set to personal favorite song selections. Intended as an adjunct to diary films, evocative - exploring the aesthetic potential of autoethnography as once reflected in avant-garde work.
2.2.1(d) COVID-19 LOCKDOWN FILMS
2.2.1(e) LATEST 420 JOURNAL FILM
2.2.1(f) AUTOETHNOGRAPHIC SHORT FICTION
THE LOCKDOWN FILMS: a series of short films and experimental montages produced and/or post-produced during China's Covid-19 lockdown period. The films were originally intended for anthologizing and the final version of 14 films was a precursor to the final "Being in Time" concept (home) movie. Formally freer than many later works.
ABORTED JOURNAL?: 420 journal films is a haphazard assembly of found footage edits experimenting with abstract imagery and text-based narration. In these films, I play with effects with less deliberation than finalized works and thus these remain works perhaps unfinished or in need of updating. Presented for archival interest.
EXPERIMENTAL AUTOETHNOGRAPHIC SHORT FILMS:: experimental AV montages of original video edited with found object media overlays - similar style but exploring more aesthetic options at the edge of the ethnographer / auteur dialectic that affected Mekas, Brakhage, Anger and the avant-garde "home movie" aesthetic.
